The
LU Department of Theatre & Dance has announced its performances for the fall semester: “The Clean House” by Sarah Ruhl; “Lost Lake” by David Auburn; and “Fall & Recovery,” choreographed by LU dance faculty and guest artists.
Alan Brincks, play director and assistant professor of theatre, said he’s most excited about offering challenging roles for LU theatre students with shows that stretch their boundaries both as students and as actors.
“In ‘
The Clean House’ specifically, we have a lot of the characters that are much older than a lot of the actors themselves and there’s elements of the play itself that stretch the limitations of the imagination for the audience as well,” Brinks said. “I think it’s a good challenging season for our students, but with every challenge comes opportunity and that’s what we’re about.”
“The Clean House,” the department’s first production, is written by Sarah Ruhl and directed by Brincks. The play follows an aspiring comedian from Brazil who reluctantly finds herself employed by a couple of doctors as a housekeeper. This theatrical, whimsical and wildly funny play was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Drama in 2005 and won the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize in 2004, which is awarded annually to the best English-language play written by a woman. “The Clean House” will take the stage on Oct. 6 through Oct. 9 with showtimes beginning at 7:30 p.m. and the Sunday matinee at 2 p.m.
The second production, “
Lost Lake,” is written by Pulitzer Prize winner David Auburn and directed by guest artist and LU alumna Caitlin Grammer. In this play, the struggle for connection in an imperfect world takes center stage as two strangers are bound together by circumstance at a lakeside rental. “Lost Lake” performances are Nov. 3 through Nov. 6 with showtimes beginning at 7:30 p.m. and the Sunday matinee at 2 p.m.
The third production is “
Fall & Recovery,” choreographed by LU dance faculty and guest artists with performances on Nov. 18 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 19 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
“We have some amazing shows lined up this season with very talented individuals. My job as a director is to make sure that everything fits, but I’m only one person,” Brincks said. “I’m surrounded by a fantastic team and having these amazing brains in the room that have skills that I don’t is always welcomed.”
All theatre and dance performances will be held in the Studio Theatre between the Dishman Art Museum and the Jimmy Simmons Music building on the Â鶹ÊÓƵ campus.
