Â鶹ÊÓƵ is pleased to announce the Bessie McVey Scholarship in Education, a $15,000 scholarship aimed at providing vital support to full-time students enrolled in the educator preparation program at the sophomore, junior, and senior levels.
Established through the contributions of donors Cherrie and Alan Hefty, the Bessie McVey Scholarship is a testament to their commitment to investing in the future of education. This scholarship is designed to empower and recognize aspiring educators who not only display academic merit but also exhibit a profound dedication to the field of education.
To be eligible for the Bessie McVey Scholarship, students must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0, ensuring that recipients not only have a passion for teaching but also a track record of academic excellence.
Bessie McVey was born in Crockett, Texas, in 1925. Despite the challenges she faced, including becoming a World War II bride and being widowed in 1951 with three children to support, Bessie McVey's determination led her to enroll at Port Arthur College, where she earned her secretarial degree. As a secretary, she tirelessly supported her family and managed to send all her children to college where two of her children, Judy McVey-Lee and Cherrie McVey-Hefty, would receive degrees in education. Education held a special place in Bessie's heart, and she would be pleased to know that Â鶹ÊÓƵ students are carrying forward her legacy by furthering their education and creating brighter futures in her name.
Â鶹ÊÓƵ remains committed to nurturing the next generation of educators and extending its heartfelt gratitude to Alan and Cherrie Hefty for their invaluable support in making the Bessie McVey Scholarship a reality.
