The Beaumont City Council honored Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s athletics program Tuesday, recognizing its recent success and designating Oct. 1 as “Lamar Athletics Day.”
During the ceremony, Mayor Roy West and council members presented Â鶹ÊÓƵ Director of Athletics Jeff O’Malley with a proclamation celebrating the school’s recent win of the Commissioner’s Cup. The award, given annually to the top athletic program in the Southland Conference, was secured by the Cardinals for the first time in school history.
During the 2022-23 season, Lamar claimed the cup with a combined score of 124.5 points, earning 59.5 points on the men's side and 65.0 on the women's side. LU outpaced second-place McNeese by 14 points. The season was highlighted by conference titles from the LU women's cross country, soccer, and basketball teams, as well as a baseball championship.
“Winning the Commissioner’s Cup is a true team achievement,” O’Malley said during the presentation. “Every student-athlete, coach, and staff member deserves a lot of credit and should take great pride in what we've accomplished. To do something that’s never been done in Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s history and to be recognized for it is truly special.”
