LU hosts Fall 2024 career expo for students and alumni

Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s Fall 2024 Career Expo took place last week, offering students and alumni from all majors the opportunity to explore internships, co-ops, and full-time positions in a wide variety of fields.Â鶹ÊÓƵ Career Fair

Employers from industries such as oil and gas, retail, healthcare, petrochemical, construction, finance, criminal justice, and more were present. Notably, recruiters from organizations like the CIA, FBI, Defense Intelligence Agency, and local police departments attended, seeking to connect with Â鶹ÊÓƵ students.

Amy Dillow, career consultant at Lamar’s Career and Professional Development Center, emphasized the value of early engagement with career services. “Our department’s goal is to encourage early adoption of career services, especially by getting freshmen involved in events like this,” Dillow said. “The recruiters who attend come back year after year, allowing students to build rapport with them, even if they’re not ready for an internship. By sophomore or junior year, recruiters are saying, ‘Are you ready to apply for my internship? You're a junior, you're ready—just apply!’”

Dillow also stressed the importance of preparation. “We always recommend that students use Handshake, our job and event database, to research companies attending the career fair and the positions they’re recruiting for. Even if they can’t attend, they can still explore those opportunities online,” she said.

Senior criminal justice major Chloe Rodriguez shared her positive experience, calling the event a great opportunity for students.Career Fair FBI

“It’s really convenient for students to come here, show up dressed professionally, and have their resumes ready. The employers who attend are actively looking for candidates, which makes it a great opportunity for us. It’s a good way to get our foot in the door and start preparing for life after college,” Rodriguez said. “Being able to meet potential employers face-to-face is a big advantage. You can make a stronger impression than through online applications, and you get to ask questions directly to get a better feel for the companies.”

Â鶹ÊÓƵ holds career expos every semester, offering students and alumni continued opportunities to network and advance their careers.
