Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s Pulse magazine announces 2025 award winners

Pulse, Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s student-run literary magazine, has announced the winners of its annual awards, recognizing exceptional student work in creative writing, literary translation, and visual art. The magazine, sponsored by the Department of EnglPulse Logoish and Modern Languages, is supported by generous donors and alumni.

This year’s winners include:

  • Poetry: "The Architect" by Mae Bradley
  • Poetry-in-Translation: "AMOR" by Mae Bradley, translated from Antonio Gamoneda
  • Short Fiction: "Cowboys" by Danny Young
  • Creative Nonfiction: "The Execution of Lady Jane Grey" by Grace Harmon
  • Scholarly Essay: "The Harlot Wears Scarlet: Symbolism in Chaucer’s 'The Canterbury Tale'" by Savanna Peveto-Kreatschman
  • Art: "Savior" by Nyah Greene

Pulse’s award process is fairly simple,” Claudia Cooper, editor in chief said. “Our readers nominate the submissions that stand out to them. Our prose and poetry editors overview this process, nominating works themselves if the readers don't. Once nominated, we send off those submissions to be judged by a professor in the English department. Each category is judged by a different professor Pulse feels is suited to the task.”

Cooper explained that while some categories may be awarded by default due to low submission numbers, the overall goal remains the same: honoring outstanding student work. Art submissions follow a unique process, with the entire Pulse team voting to select a cover winner.

“What Pulse looks for during the nomination process is an excellent control of the English language,” Cooper said. “Our readers tend to gravitate to works that are original, well-written, and evoke a strong reaction. The winners for this year’s edition of Pulse exhibit these characteristics and more.”

Founded to showcase creative expression within Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s diverse student body, Pulse annually accepts undergraduate and graduate submissions in formal poetry, free verse, short fiction, scholarly essays, and literary translation. The magazine also awards modest cash prizes to exemplary works, made possible by longtime supporters including the Eleanor Perlstein Weinbaum family and estate, Dave Oliphant, R.S. Gwynn, and others.

Pulse accepts applications for student editors and readers on a rolling basis. For more information, contact pulse@lamar.edu.
