Pre-Occupational Therapy Studies

Although specific admission requirements may vary depending on the occupational therapy program or school of one’s choice, these requirements most regularly include:

  • 15 semester hours of general education
  • 8 semester hours of anatomy and physiology
  • 4 semester hours of general chemistry
  • 6-9 semester hours of English
  • 3 semester hours of Kinesiology
  • 13-16 semester hours of psychology

In addition to a very good overall grade point average, students interested in occupational therapy should consider gaining clinical experience by way of volunteer work in a hospital or clinical setting or through other opportunities that involve working with people. Among pre-occupational therapy students, biology, psychology and sociology tend to be popular majors.

There are nine occupational therapy programs in Texas which offer the Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) degree, and applicants to these programs are required to take the Graduate Record Examination and to submit all admission materials in a timely manner as specified by the programs and schools to which they apply.

Students who are accepted into a professional program in occupational therapy must complete approximately two full years of intensive training that prepares them to work in a variety of different hospital and clinical settings. In addition to being clinicians, occupational therapists may also have careers as administrators, educators, or researchers. Students should be aware of the ACOTE 2027 mandate and timeline that requires all entry level occupational therapy programs to transition to the doctoral level. Students can find out more about this mandate on the website.
