The Julian Galiano Memorial Scholarship in Communication

This scholarship was established with a bequest from the Estate of Julian M. Galiano. Mr. Galiano was a graduate of French High School and Â鶹ÊÓƵ, who had a hand in naming the Lamar college newspaper the “University Press” during his tenure as editor for the publication.

After graduating from Lamar, he began a career in journalism at the Port Arthur News and later joined the Beaumont Enterprise. Mr. Galiano had an encyclopedic recall of sports and a deep knowledge of Beaumont and regional history. He was very proud of his relationships with family and friends, praising their accomplishments in his writing for the Beaumont Enterprise.

Major/Degree Emphasis: Open to students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Communication, with a preference for students interested in a career in Journalism.

Recipients must be enrolled full time and maintain a 3.0 GPA.


The Hannah Elizabeth Willis Memorial Scholarship

The Hannah Elizabeth Willis Memorial Scholarship was established by family and friends in honor of Hannah's vibrant spirit and desire to help others.

Major/Degree Emphasis: Communication

Overall GPA: Minimum 3.5 GPA

Class level: Undergraduate

Class Load: Full-time

Exceptions may be made for last semester students who may not need to be full-time to complete the requirements for graduation.


The Press Club of Southeast Texas Memorial Scholarship

The Press Club of Southeast Texas established the Press Club of Southeast Texas Memorial Scholarship in memory of members who are now deceased. The Press Club is open to journalists and public relations professionals in Jefferson, Hardin, Orange, Liberty, Chambers, Jasper, Tyler, Polk and Newton counties.

Major/Degree emphasis: Advertising, Journalism, Mass Communication, Public Relations or related field

Overall GPA: Minimum 3.0 GPA

Class level: Undergraduate with at least 60 hours

Class Load: Full-time


The Jewel Dillinger Blanton Scholarship

The Jewel Dillinger Blanton Memorial Endowment in Communication is open to all class levels pursing any degree in Communications.

Major/Degree emphasis: Communication

Overall GPA: Minimum 2.5 GPA for continuing students; incoming Freshmen must be in the top 25% of class

Class level: Open to all class levels

Class Load: Full-time

The Shirley Ceasar-J.C. Hughes, Sr. Scholarship

Mr. Joseph Clyde Hughes, Jr. established the Shirley Ceasar-J. C. Hughes, Sr. Scholarship in Communications. It is named after his parents.

Major/Degree emphasis: Communication

Overall GPA: Minimum 2.5 GPA

Class level: Sophomore, Junior, or Senior

Class Load: Full-time

  • Preference given to a student intern or student actively involved in Department of Communication activities, clubs and/or organizations.

The Robert H. Wilkerson Journalism Scholarship

The Robert H. Wilkerson Memorial Scholarship in Communication was established by the four children of Mr. Robert Harold “Bob” Wilkerson as a loving memorial. The four children are Carl Wilkerson, Bob Wilkerson, Joan Carolan and Jean Moore. Mr. Wilkerson was a well-known journalism educator, retired associate professor of communication and advisor for the University Press.

Major/Degree emphasis: Journalism track only

Overall GPA: Minimum 3.0 GPA

Class level: Open to all class levels

Class Load: Full-time


The Tom E. Jackson Memorial Scholarship

The Tom E. Jackson Memorial Scholarship was established by friends and family.

Major/Degree emphasis: Preference will be given to those students interested in a career in public or corporate communication.

Overall GPA: Minimum 2.5 GPA

Class level: Open to all class levels

Class Load: Full-time

  • Student should be active in Department of Communication activities, clubs and/or organizations.

The KBTV Channel 4 Scholarship

KBTV established this scholarship as a token of its appreciation to Â鶹ÊÓƵ for providing them with quality graduates. The scholarship is open to all class levels pursuing a degree in Communication. Preference will be given to those students who express an interest in the fields of journalism and/or media.

Major/Degree emphasis: Communication

Overall GPA: Minimum 2.5 GPA

Class level: Open to all class levels

Class Load: Full-time OR Part-time


The Fred Hartman and John Blair Scholarship

Frances Blair Bethea and her husband, Sam, established the Fred Hartman and John Blair Memorial Scholarship. Frances is an attorney in Beaumont and Sam is the Customer Service Manager for Entergy Texas. Hartman and Blair met in 1971 and formed a strong and enduring friendship.

Hartman was editor and publisher of the Baytown Sun newspaper, and Blair owned an insurance agency in Kountze, Texas. Mr. Hartman served on the Â鶹ÊÓƵ Board of Regents and Mr. Blair served as a trustee for the John Gray Foundation which was responsible for the creation of the John Gray Institute.

Major/Degree emphasis: Journalism track

Overall GPA: Minimum 2.5 GPA

Class level: Open to all class levels

Class Load: Full-time

  • The recipient should be a communication major enrolled in the print journalism track.
  • The recipient must also be a full-time student and must maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA.
  • The intent of this scholarship is to provide funds to a student while interning at a newspaper.

The Helen and Blakey Locke Regents Scholarship

The Helen Caldwell Locke & Curtis Blakey Locke Regents Memorial Scholarship in Communication was established through the Helen Caldwell Locke and Curtis Blakey Locke Charitable Trust. The scholarship is open to Communication majors with preference given to students concentrating in journalism or media.

Major/Degree emphasis: Communication, Journalism or Media

Overall GPA: Top 25% of graduating class

Class level: Open only to incoming freshmen; automatically renews for four years

Class Load: Full-time OR Part-time


The Gordon Baxter Scholarship

The Press Club of Southeast Texas organized the Gordon Baxter Scholarship in Communication to honor Gordon for his excellence in communication and for his successes in life. The scholarship is open to all class levels pursuing a degree in Communication Broadcasting.

Major/Degree emphasis: Broadcasting

Overall GPA: Minimum 2.5 GPA

Class level: Open to all class levels

Class Load: Full-time


The Janice Trammel Scholarship

The Janice Trammell Scholarship in Communication was established by the Board of Trustees of the Â鶹ÊÓƵ Foundation on the occasion of Janice’s retirement and in honor of her commitment and dedication as Executive Director of the Foundation from 2001 to 2013.

Janice earned her Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing and Master of Science in Speech from Lamar. She joined the staff of Lamar in Continuing Education and served as adjunct faculty for the Department of Communication. She then served as Executive Director of the Â鶹ÊÓƵ Foundation. During those same years, she also held dual responsibility as the Director of Development for the Â鶹ÊÓƵ Office of University Advancement.

Major/Degree emphasis: Communication

Overall GPA: Minimum 3.0 GPA

Class level: Open to junior, senior and graduate student levels pursuing a degree in Communication

Class Load: Full-time


The Lyman C. Wear and Nancy W. Evans Scholarship

Major/Degree Emphasis: Any degree offered through the Â鶹ÊÓƵ Department of Communication

Overall GPA: Recipients must maintain a 3.5 GPA to qualify/remain on the scholarship. Recipients may remain on the scholarship until graduation as long as the selection criteria is met and the student is in good standing in accordance with standard university procedures for continuation of a scholarship.

Class Level: Undergraduate and graduate level students.

Class Load: Full-time students. Exceptions may be made for last semester students who may not need to be full-time to complete the requirements for graduation.

Other Requirements: During the time as the designated scholarship recipient, the student will perform and provide documented evidence of 25 hours of community service annually (fall and spring semester).
